My name is Khalid. We’re going to explain the water flow going through to the downspout. Basically, we raise up one end of the gutter so that all the water leads toward the downspout, so you don’t get an overflow on one end. Now we’ve got a fully functioning gutter and downspout, and we’ve got our filter on top so no leaves are getting in there. As you can see, the water is hitting the top of the filter and passing right through. This isn’t as hard as normal rain would be, but through normal rain you’d never see the water spilling over like this. It’s going straight into the gutter, and you can see it coming through there. No leaks, no clogging. The water isn’t going over and it isn’t coming back. It’s going straight through the filter because of the pitch. No leaves are going to come through, no heavy dirt is going to come through, only light material that will follow the water through the downspout.

Water backs up behind a packed trough and sits against the fascia board. That board is wood, it is painted on one side only, and it is the thing holding your gutter to the house.

How often should gutters be cleaned in San Ramon?

How do I know if my gutters are already failing?
Look for staining down the fascia, water marks on the siding under a joint, soil that has been dug out below the roofline, and a downspout that stays dry during rain. Any one of those means water is leaving the system somewhere it should not.
Do I need bigger gutters for Tri-Valley winter storms?
If your gutters overflow in a hard rain even when they are clean, usually yes. A 6 inch gutter carries about 40 percent more water than a 5 inch and pairs with larger 3 by 4 inch downspouts, which matters on long runs, steep pitches and lower roofs that catch water from upper ones.
