Rain gutters for Tri-Valley homes

How to choose rain gutters for an East Bay home, one decision at a time

Size, profile, material and protection. Get them in that order and the system handles our winter storms and looks right on the house. Here is how each decision plays out here, with the page to read next.

Most people start with color or material, because that is what you see from the street. We start with capacity. A gutter that looks perfect but cannot carry what the roof sheds in a winter downpour will overflow at the corners, soak the fascia and drop water at the foundation, no matter what it is made of.

Once size is right, the rest is about fit. Profile and material should suit the architecture, and across San Ramon, Danville, Alamo and Walnut Creek that covers a lot of ground, with nearly half the homes built before 1980. Protection depends on what grows over your roof. Oaks, pines, sycamores and bay laurel all drop something different, and the right guard depends on which ones you live under.

Our seamless runs are formed on-site by the machine our truck carries and cut to the exact length of each wall, so the only joints are at the corners.

Why seamless matters in our climate

Every joint in a gutter is held together by sealant, and sealant has a hard life here. It bakes through a long, hot summer, then gets asked to hold water through a winter of storms. That is where most leaks start. Seamless gutters cut that weak point down to the corners and outlets, because each run is one continuous piece formed to your roofline.

Questions your Solutionist answers on the roof

  • Is the current gutter overflowing because it is dirty, or because it is too small?
  • Does one valley or long run need a bigger gutter than the rest of the house?
  • Are there enough downspouts, and are they large enough for the roof above?
  • Is the fascia solid enough to hang new gutters on?
  • Will the profile and color match the trim and the architecture?
  • Which trees overhang the roof, and which guard handles what they drop?

Choosing in the right order

  1. Size for the storm. We measure the roof areas that feed each run and size the gutter and downspouts to carry them. Our post on why Tri-Valley storms overwhelm standard gutters explains the difference an inch makes.
  2. Pick the look.Profile, material and color come next, matched to the house and its trim.
  3. Protect it.A metal mesh guard keeps oak leaves, needles and grit out so the capacity you paid for stays available.

Rain Gutters Questions, Answered

What types of rain gutters do you install?

Seamless rain gutters formed on site in 5, 6 and 7 inch sizes, K-style and half-round profiles, and aluminum, copper, galvanized steel or galvalume. Metal mesh gutter guards can be added at installation or later. Every system is measured and matched to the home, not pulled off a shelf.

What do rain gutters actually do for my house?

They catch the water running off your roof and carry it through downspouts away from the house. Without them, or with clogged ones, that water lands at the base of the walls, where it erodes soil, stains siding and soaks toward the foundation. Here, where months of rain can arrive in a few storms, that job comes in short, heavy bursts.

Should I pick K-style or half-round gutters for my home?

K-style suits most homes and carries a lot of water for its size, which is why it is the most common profile. Half-round is the choice when the gutter is part of the look, often in copper. Both are available in 5 and 6 inch, and your Solutionist can show how each looks on your roofline.

How do I know my gutters are the wrong size?

Water spilling over the front edge in a normal rain while the gutter is clean, water overshooting at inside valleys, and lower gutters flooding under an upper roof all point to undersized gutters. Cleaning will not fix any of those. The answer is usually a wider gutter or more downspouts.

How long do rain gutters last?

Properly maintained gutters should last well over 20 years, and copper can last 50 to 150. Systems hung with old spike and ferrule fasteners, or built from sections, tend to fail sooner. Regular cleaning and a guard that keeps debris out are the two easiest ways to get the full life out of a system.

What goes into the price of new rain gutters?

The length of the runs, the size and profile, the material, the number of downspouts and corners, and extras like guards or underground drainage all affect the number. Roof height and access matter too. A free, written estimate from a local Solutionist gives you the exact price for your home.
